Following the recent parliamentary debate on the safeguarding of children in combat sports, Kickboxing GB wishes to update all members on an important change to UK domestic competition rules.

During the debate, the Minister for Sport, Stephanie Peacock MP, emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of children in sport is a top priority for her department. The Minister referenced the recent inquest into the death of a 15-year-old competitor, highlighting serious concerns around clubs and competitions operating outside of the governance of recognised national bodies.

At Kickboxing GB, athlete welfare is our highest priority. All our sanctioned events are regulated under the framework of WAKO, the International Federation for Kickboxing recognised by the IOC. WAKO sets strict rules around age categories, weight divisions, and medical safety standards. Kickboxing GB is a signatory of the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts and fully adheres to the UK Grassroots Concussion Guidelines, introduced by DCMS and the Sport and Recreation Alliance in 2023.

However, as in sport, so too in governance—we must continually assess and improve. When tragedies occur, whether within or outside our jurisdiction, we have a duty to reflect, review, and act.  Accordingly, KBGB have implemented an age rule which will apply with immediate effect.

Domestic Rule – Effective Immediately

Effective immediately, junior athletes may only compete in the senior division at UK competitions if they are aged 18 or over on the day of the event. This rule will be enforced at all Kickboxing GB-sanctioned events, beginning with the Bristol Open (17–19 October 2025).

Coach and Club Responsibilities

All GB-affiliated coaches and clubs must adhere to this change. This rule forms part of our Safe Practice Policy, and applies even when competing abroad. You must not enter junior athletes into senior divisions unless they meet the new minimum age requirement of 18 years on the day of competition.

Failure to comply may result in:

    • Disciplinary action under the Kickboxing GB Conduct and Discipline Policy.
    • Personal legal liability in the event of an incident resulting in harm, as such actions would contravene Kickboxing GB’s official safeguarding framework.

Impact on Rankings and International Eligibility

We recognise that this may affect junior athletes seeking to accumulate points toward international rankings and team GB selection. We are actively engaging with WAKO to advocate for this change to be adopted internationally, ensuring that our safety-first approach is reflected in global standards.

This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to the safety of our athletes and the integrity of our sport. Thank you for your continued support in upholding the highest standards across all levels of Kickboxing GB.
